savoury granola

Not another granola recipe… I know that’s what you’re thinking.

I’m over boring oats… let’s change things up a bit here, shall we?  I’m on a roll after my re-make of the overnight variety, so let’s kick on, seeing it’s Australia Day and all, let’s go crazy.

Me at 6am with a sleepy bung eye and oats on my face.  Seriously, try this and your face will be thanking you (or me, whatever).

  • 1T oat flour
  • 1/2t ground flax seed
  • 1/2t raw, organic honey
  • Splash of water to make a spreadable paste
  1. Mix into a goop, spread on face.
  2. Leave on your face for as long as you can handle it… maybe 10 minutes.
  3. Either lick off, or wash off with water.
  4. Rejoice in your amazingly vibrant and glowing appearance.
Actually, that wasn’t the recipe I was wanting to post…

Savoury Granola:

(Vegan, nut, gluten and cane sugar free)

  • 2T sunflower seeds
  • 2T pepitas
  • 2T raw buckwheat groats
  • 2T chia seeds
  • 2T raw quinoa
  • 1/2C  certified gluten free oats
  • 2T tamari sauce (or soy sauce)
  • 1T brown rice syrup (or honey, agave or even sweet chilli sauce would be great)
  • 1t apple cider vinegar
  • 2t coconut oil (liquid)
  • 1/4t sea salt
  • 1/4t chilli flakes (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  1. Combine all ingredients together.
  2. Spread out on a lined baking tray.
  3. Bake at 150 degrees C for 20 minutes, lower oven to 130 degrees for a further 20 minutes.  Keep an eye on the granola, stirring regularly to ensure even cooking.
  4. Turn oven down to 100 degrees C and cook for a final 30 miuntes (or until golden brown and crunchy).
  5. Store in an air tight container.
I served this as a salad sprinkle on my latest favourite combo – grated zuccinni, capers and the recipe below.

Vegan Sweet Potato ‘Pesto’

  • 3/4C cooked sweet potato
  • 1/2C fresh basil leaves
  • 3/4C white beans
  • 1/2C nutritional yeast
  • 1 + 1/2T apple cider vinegar
  • 2t lemon juice
  • 3/4t sea salt
  • 1/4c water
  • 3 cloves crushed garlic
  • 3/4t whole grain mustard
  • 1/8C olive oil
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  1. Blend everything together.

Today’s ‘Aussie Classic,’ for Australia Day (hooray!) is probably one of the best things in the world to eat after a long day of fishing, hiking, mission-ing around some beautiful part of Australia…. I’m talking about DAMPER.

Returning to your campsite, and after a few glasses of red, try this on for size:

Aussie Camping Damper

Sitting around a camp fire, drinking vino, and eating hot ‘bread’ doused in butter, jam, honey, or all of the above.  Yip, definitely a True Blue Aussie Classic right there.

    • Lou says :

finally a recipe for savoury granola! so many bloggers posting recipes about sweet breakfasts and sweet granola.. i love savoury breakfast and am so excited to create these. even if i dont eat them for breakfast i am sure on top of a salad or as a snack they would be great.
the face mask looks amazing, i never think of making my own. i should definitely get started on that.

    • Lou says :

Home made beauty-products are so good – way cheaper, and none of the nasty ‘add ins’ that companies sneak in there. Oast are amazing for the skin – not just food for the tunny, food for your face!

The granola is so good as a snack, or dish-sprinkle, salty, crunchy YUM… I’m usually a sweetie girl, but I am totally digging this :)

  3. Ami @ parsnipsandpears says :

ahhh love the idea of savoury granola! And a face mask recipe to boot! Awesome :)

    • Lou says :

Give the face mask a go, seriously, I do it a couple of times a week, and it makes your skin feel amazing. Oats are so soothing on the skin, I use them as a body scrub too when my eczema flares up.

  4. Hannah says :

Love love love! Deliciousness indeed. And thank you for the face mask idea! Somewhat cheaper than Lush… ;)

    • Lou says :

Totally cheaper than lush, AND it’s totally edible…. if you are running late it’s beauty+ breakfast all in one, Ha.

  5. Brittany says :

I am making this mask this week. Thank you for that my naturalistic friend. I love you and your natural ways. I will need to be fed that granola and sweet potato concoction too…yummm.

    • Lou says :

DO IT… make the mask, it’s a treat for your face, makes your skin feel so smooth, I LOVE it. I put oats, honey and raw milk in Misty’s bath when he gets nappy rash, and he always tries to drink the bath water, mmmmm milky ;)

  6. Heather Eats Almond Butter says :

Yay, I’m getting your posts again in my google reader!!! Not so sure about the savory granola. Normally, I’d probaby love it, but right now my taste buds are so wonky. However, I’d be all over that hunk of hot bread! :)
    Happy Aussie Day!

    • Lou says :

Hurrah! I’m so proud… I fixed the feed myself (I’m really really dumb when it comes to technology, argh). I reckon you would LOVE damper…. it’s so doughy, chewy and satisfying. It’s about the only time I like butter on something – melty butter and honey on hot bread – awesome. Hope you’re feeling OK… thinking of you and the little HEABies x

dont know what happened to your posts bc i wasnt getting them in my google reader, but now i have 11 to catch up on. weeee…

so ive starred this face mask because it sounds divine for my skin.

as for the savory granola. ummm, yes! its like you took croutons to the next level (way better and healthier). no salad is safe now that i have this recipe :) yummy.

    • Lou says :

Yeah, silly feed issues – fixed now, hurrah! I’m so bad with technology ;) Welcome back!

Oats are just incredible, both on the face, and in the mouth – I love using them on my skin, they make it feel so soft and smooth. Great for soothing irritated, sensitive skin :)

  8. Yolie @ Practising Wellness says :

I love the sound of that face mask – homemade products can be so great for sensitive skin, right?! What moisturiser do you use on your face, Lou? The one you made? :-) xyx

    • Lou says :

Usually I just dab a little coconut oil on my face at night – it’s pretty heavy so I do it at night to let it soak in. I use diluted apple cider vinegar or cucumber water for toner, and tea tree oil for pimples. Homeamde products = awesome, cheap and good for the eco-Goddess in all of us :)

  9. Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli says :

Ok, so that mask is seriously happening in like 5 minutes! And savoury granola? Woman, you are a frickin genius! That sweet potato pesto looks pretty divine as well!

    • Lou says :

The mask makes your skin feel incredible, oats are pretty amazing…. you can even eat it straight off your face. Ha.

  10. Christin@purplebirdblog says :

I love your face… even when it’s covered in goop. i demand more photos of you and all of your prettiness and awesomeness, please.

    • Lou says :

Oh shucks,,, you make me blush Christin! Seriously, photos are my worst nightmare, I HATE pictures of myself, ick. I’m dreading August cos me and Viper are tying the knot, so I know I will have to be in front of the camera a lot, ew ew ew. Makes me so nervous and awkward!

  11. raechel @the rebel grrrl kitchen says :

Oh my yum, to all of this! Yummm!

And we are true soulsisters, lady. I just made an oat facemask for myself last night! Mine was banana, oats, coconut oil. So great!
